How to Become the BEST YOU This Fall

Summer is fading, and the bright fall colors are gradually emerging. Usually, at this point, our attention starts to shift. By now, the back-to-school preparations should be complete. Your family is probably settling into new schedules and routines. But what about you? Have you given any thought to getting ready for the new season personally and professionally?

Autumn is the perfect season for entrepreneurs to pause and prioritize on a personal and professional level. However, before exploring ways to prepare your business for the upcoming season (which will be the subject of my next blog), let’s look at ways to ensure you are at the top of your game.

There is no doubt that running a business is demanding. Therefore, it’s essential to remember the importance of personally recharging, reflecting, planning, and rebooting. This will not only empower us but also our businesses. In this blog post, we’ll explore the significance of these practices and how they can help us make the most of this thought-provoking season.

4 Tips for Personal Rejuvenation in Autumn

Recharge: Nourishing Your Spirit

Entrepreneurship is often a demanding venture. It’s not uncommon to find ourselves working late or on weekends. Sacrificing personal time for the sake of our businesses is also not uncommon. While dedication is vital, it’s equally important to remember that our creative energies need replenishing. Autumn’s crisp air and vibrant colors provide the ideal backdrop for pausing, breathing, and recharging.

I’m aware there is so much to do and family and others to care for. But will there ever be an ideal time? Furthermore, this is likely when time for yourself is most needed. Even scheduling just a few minutes each day to reset will do wonders. In the long run, you will likely feel less stressed and ready to tackle whatever comes your way.

Here are a few simple, time-effective, and practical things you can do to pause and recharge. Remember, these do not have to be one-time activities. Rather, they can be incorporated into your daily way of life.

Recharging Activities for the Fall

Taking a Walk: Nothing rejuvenates like a brisk walk. Take the time to enjoy the changing leaves and the cooler temperatures. Breathe in the fresh air. Walking also has proven health benefits. It is inexpensive and can even be done with a friend.

Drinking a Warm Beverage: Enjoy a tasty warm beverage with a hint of fall flavoring. Hot apple cider, a maple, gingerbread, or pumpkin latte, ginger tea, or vanilla or peppermint hot chocolate, just to name a few options Be sure to savor the flavor while it is hot and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Reading a Good Book: Find a book that you would enjoy that is unrelated to work. Then, pull out your favorite blanket and curl up to read for 30 minutes or so.

Taking a Nap: You may find that your body and mind need a much-needed nap. Be sure to keep the nap short—maybe 10–20 minutes at most. Furthermore, take the nap before 3 p.m. and in a quiet environment. There is no need to feel guilty or lazy for napping. Like walking, napping provides numerous benefits.

Unplugging from Social Media: This may be difficult, as much of your business may rely on social media. However, in your personal time, try to unplug from it. The previous suggestions are just a few alternatives to social media. They will recharge your mind and body rather than drain them.

Reflect: Gaining Personal Clarity

As entrepreneurs, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind, sometimes neglecting our own growth and well-being. However, fall seems like the perfect time for reconnecting with ourselves. This often involves some introspection. Start by taking time to reflect on your life, values, and aspirations. Consider what’s important to you, both in the short term and the long term. Ask yourself questions like, What do I want to personally achieve? What areas of my life need improvement? What would make me happier and more fulfilled?

Paul Paris, Ph.D., outlines three areas to consider when attempting to gain personal clarity. They are:

Identify your Core Values: Consider the ingredients of our lives that are critical to us. Writing them out is helpful. It will remind us of where we are on track and where we might have lost our way.

Identify Energy Charges and Drains: Determine what activities and people invigorate and, conversely, drain your energy. Find ways to enhance the first and eliminate the second.

Set Intentions and Rituals for the Rest of the Year: Determine some practices that will enhance positive messages, affirmations, and wisdom in your life. You might consider an inspirational calendar or devotional reading. Furthermore, implement some self-care practices into your daily routine. Journaling or one of the previous recharging activities might be something to consider.

For some, autumn brings a sense of loss or sadness as the leaves turn color and fall. However, as Paul writes, it does not have to. Fall can be a time for strengthening our roots.

Plan: Setting Your Personal Course

With newfound energy (recharged) and clarity (reflection), comes the opportunity to plan for the future. Autumn is an excellent time to set new personal goals. The SMART process is ideal for setting personal goals. You will want your goals to be  Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Limited.

Once you have your SMART goal(s), you may wish to do the following:

  1. Break It Down: Divide larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks or milestones. This makes the goal less overwhelming. Also, it allows you to track progress more effectively.
  2. Write Them Down: Document your goals in writing. This reinforces your commitment and makes your goals more tangible. Keep your written goals in a place where you can revisit and review them regularly.
  3. Prioritize: Not all goals are equally important. Determine which goals are a top priority. Then focus your energy on them. It’s often better to work on a few meaningful goals at a time rather than spreading yourself too thin.
  4. Create an Action Plan: Outline the specific steps you need to take to achieve each goal. Consider what resources, skills, or support you may need to reach your objectives.
  5. Stay Accountable: Share your goals with someone you trust. This may be a friend, family member, or mentor. Having someone to hold you accountable can boost your motivation and commitment.
  6. Track Progress: Regularly review your goals and track your progress. Celebrate your achievements along the way. Don’t let setbacks demotivate you.
  7. Adjust as Needed: Be flexible and open to adjusting your goals if circumstances change.

Always remember that setting personal goals is a continuous journey. This journey is filled with growth and opportunities, so approach it with commitment, adaptability, and perseverance.

Reboot: Implementing Renewed Energy Values and Goals

Recharging, reflecting, and planning are the initial steps to making sure you are the best version of yourself. However, if you were to stop there, you would fall short. The final step is to personally reboot. It’s in this phase that you roll up your sleeves and put your insights and intentions into action. Perhaps you’ve decided to prioritize your health, explore new hobbies, or achieve a better work-life balance. Personal rebooting is about actively reshaping your daily life to align with your vision.

How to Reboot

When rebooting, be sure to do the following:

  • Start small: One step, one goal at a time.
  • Be Adaptable: Be flexible and open to adjustments along the way. If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to modify your approach.
  • Stay Persistent: Rebooting takes time and effort. Stay persistent and keep working towards your goals, even when faced with challenges.
  • Celebrate Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate your successes, no matter how small. This will boost your motivation and confidence.

As entrepreneurs, it’s important to recognize that fall presents an opportune moment for personal and professional rejuvenation. However, I believe that it is crucial to our professional lives to be on top of our game personally. Seize fall as a great time to personally recharge, reflect, plan, and reboot. Investing in your personal growth will reap a healthy harvest not only for your overall well-being but for your business too. Happy Fall!
